Day 679: A ShredderSphere Widget?

By

G’day Shredders,

Yesterday I received a great suggestion from Andrew: Project Ripped in the comments section of the Shredder Sunday #31 post.

Comment by Andrew on September 16, 2008 8:32 pm

Hi Adam

I use an RSS reader (NetNewsWire) to keep up to date with all the shredders blog posts.

Do you have an RSS feed for the shreddersphere blog roll? It would make sense to do this through RSS and then whenever a new member is added all of our blogs would have an up to date set of links.

I am sure it wouldn’t be too difficult to work out a bit of code to include in our layouts to display the list.

What do you think?

Andrew

Thanks for your comment Andrew. I actually use Net News Wire myself to keep up-to-date with all Shredders in the Council, Sphere and Blog Roll, it is a great time-saving piece of software as it negates the need to check each blog manually via a browser.

In regards to a group RSS feed for the ShredderSphere I believe that would be a great innovation as any new additions would automatically be updated across all Shredder Blogs (without the need for each Shredder to manually insert new links every month).

How A ShredderSphere Widget Could Work…

It is my understanding that this would probably require a custom-built “widget” in order to channel and automatically update all Shredder Blog RSS feeds. Once the “widget” is built then each Shredder would only have to insert the code into their side nav bar one time only, which would be a great time-saver.

Calling All “Widget Programmers”!

If there are any programmers or people familiar with “widgets” reading this blog I would very much appreciate your comments as to whether a ShredderSphere “widget” like what I have described above is feasible (I’m just guessing!)

Thank you again Andrew for your great suggestion!

Until tomorrow…

Catch ya,

Hey Adam – I was thinking the same thing, and planned to create a prototype of one (a standalone ‘portal’ plus a widget). If everyone’s keen then I can look at working on it in the coming weeks? I think people would have to opt-in to it though to ensure we don’t infringe on anyone’s privacy.

    Whaddya reckon? :)

Hi Mark, that would be great mate, I would definitely be interested in your possible widget prototype.

In regards to a “portal” I was planning on starting a “Ning-based” portal for the ShredderSphere (forums, etc) though I hesitate to make the “ShredderSphere experience” too time-consuming in terms of online activity. However, if there is demand for a portal perhaps we could discuss this as well.

Feel free to drop me an email Mark,
    Thanks again,
    Adam

Adam, if you’re actually looking into expanding the role of the shreddersphere, I’d hook up with a web 2.0 upstart and social network this thing. We’ve got a dozen blogs all over the place, but if you made it easy to start one up, and immediately be hooked into to the rest of the shredder sphere, I think you’d see the worlds first Daily Accountability Social Networking site explode.

You can make a widget easily with Google Reader. I just made one out of my Council feed and put it on my blog under the Council badge left sidebar. Is that what you had in mind?

  • http://journeyto185.com Mark

Hey Adam – I’ll send you a facebook message, not sure what email address you check. As for a ‘portal’ I meant just a single page aggregating everyone’s feeds. A Ning site sounds awesome :)

Lilla – how did you do that in Google Reader? That would save lots of time! :)

  • http://www.KaliLilla.com Lilla

In Google Reader, set-up your subscriptions (i.e. add all ShredderSphere feeds) > Create a Folder for them > go to Manage Subscriptions > Folders & Tags > make your folder “public ” > chose “Add a Blogroll to your Site” > copy code and paste on to your blog. Voila!

p.s. If you look at the bottom of my Council widget, it says “Read more…” Click on it and you will get an aggregated single page portal with Council feeds.

    Awesome! :)

Lilla, you are just great! :-)

Hi Adan, I am hoping this question is not too dumb to ask, but I ‘ve been looking at your site for some time now and got a lot of motivation from it. I also look at the accountability log you have and was wondering if you have this on an excel sheet or how do you get the information in everyday? If it’s in excel, do you have in somewhere we can also get it?

    Thank you.

    Jose.

Hi JK, I think you are right mate, today I have been researching “plug and play” systems for blogging that would hook into the ShredderSphere (and the RTP Transformation System).

  • http://www.rtp-blog.com Adam Waters

Thank you for your advice regarding Google Feeds Lilla, that may be the simplest way to go, and also allows each Shredder a quick way of checking feeds. One question, is the Google Reader system Java-script based (as WordPress.com blogs do not allow any java-script)

  • http://journeyto185.com Mark

Adam – yeah, it is :( What a pain!

  • http://www.KaliLilla.com Lilla

Yep, javascript. WP.com’ers are out of luck.

But it’s an easy option to plug into a Ning site if you like. “Give it To Me Raw” does it on the bottom of their Ning. But I guess that doesn’t solve the problem of making a widget for the shreddersphere blogs. Maybe Yahoo Pipes will work? http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/

  • Jose

Hello again Adam and dear fellas!
I made one of your accountability reports on excel… sorry about asking and being LAZY. This is awesome, thank you again for the motivation… I was checking on some other people’s blog like Lilla and it’s soooo good. I am learning a lot with you guys. Thank you, thank you, thank you again!

    Jose.

Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback based on my idea. I am a bit tied up at the moment but having a wordpress site I would like to try and build a bit of code, or use a plugin, to display what we suggested. I like Lilla’s method so far.

I will feedback if I have any success.
